Apple Hidden album: consider the built-in option first
The old claim that Hidden album simply obscures photos without access protection is misleading. Apple says Hidden album is locked by default on iOS 16 and later. Its settings control authentication, and hidden items can still sync with iCloud Photos.
It may be sufficient when you want to keep a few photos out of ordinary browsing. It does not give you a separate vault PIN. Our Hidden album guide covers the workflow.
Keepsafe: check both backup and full-resolution availability
Keepsafe documents a Backup & Sync switch. It also offers Space Saver, which keeps smaller copies on your phone and originals in its cloud. That distinction matters if you expect to open or export originals without internet.
Its export instructions describe sending selected photos back to Camera Roll. Consider Keepsafe when its backup workflow fits your needs; check the plan and local-original settings before relying on offline access.
Private Photo Vault: separate local storage from Cloud Vault
The developer's FAQ says photos stay on-device when Cloud Vault is disabled, while device-level iCloud backups may contain encrypted copies. It also distinguishes app-password recovery from the unrecoverable Cloud Vault password.
The current FAQ describes Premium subscriptions and a Basic option, so this guide no longer treats the product as a simple higher-upfront-price purchase. Check the exact edition and offer in your region. Choose it if its documented backup and organization options suit you, and verify recovery before moving your library.
Six checks before trusting a photo vault
Use ordinary sample photos for these checks. Record the app version and iOS version so you can repeat them after updates.
- Import: add a sample and check image quality, date and orientation.
- Originals offline: turn off Wi-Fi and cellular data, reopen the app, and zoom into the sample. A thumbnail alone does not demonstrate that the original is stored locally.
- Lock: close the app, lock your phone, and reopen it. Check the credential and relock behavior.
- Export: export the sample and inspect the result. Check whether quality and details important to you survived.
- Other copies: review Photos, Recently Deleted, Files and any sync service. Importing into a vault is not proof that the source was removed.
- Recovery: read what happens after a forgotten PIN, lost phone or deleted app. Keep a verified backup before removing originals.
These are checks to perform on your device, not results we measured. A lock screen alone cannot establish an app's encryption quality or network behavior.

Does the iPhone Hidden album protect photos?
Yes. On iOS 16 and later it is locked by default. It remains part of Photos and uses device authentication rather than a separate vault PIN.
Does offline access mean my originals are on the phone?
Not necessarily. Some apps keep smaller local copies while originals are in the cloud. Check full-resolution viewing and export without Wi-Fi or cellular data.
